Smith Optics announced its exciting new partnership with Recon Instruments this week. They have created a new I/O Snow Goggle that boasts GPS and Bluetooth® MOD (Micro Optics Display) Live technology features as well as interchangeable lenses. This high tech goggle integrates the best of leading technology and design for skiers and snowboarders who want the ultimate ride.

For Immediate Release (Jan. 16, 2012): In a world where technology seems to be everywhere, market leaders Smith Optics and Recon Instruments are partnering to put tech where it matters - right in front of your eye. Through a formal partnership, Smith Optics will be debuting new product incorporating Recon Instruments direct-to-eye technology at the upcoming Outdoor Retailer, Snow Industries America (SIA), and ISPO trade shows. With Bluetooth® connectivity to smartphones more information will be immediately visible to skiers and snowboarders than ever before.

“When we created the I/O goggle the industry took notice. When Recon created their direct-to-eye technology early adopters noticed. Over the past few years we have been quietly working together to enhance both and we will proudly debut the result at the upcoming shows.” said Eric Carlson, VP of Product & Design at Smith Optics. Recon Instruments’ next generation of technology will boast a number of additional groundbreaking features. Users will be able to view Bluetooth® video on the widescreen LCD installed in the goggle and navigate through the fully integrated MOD Live experience with the use of a wireless remote.

The displays utilize GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, altimeter and temperature sensors to provide skiers and riders with precise speed, jump, vertical, altitude, location, distance, and temperature measurements and readings in real-time. MOD Live boasts additional smartphone connectivity and advanced onboard apps.

“Sunday, we lost one of the great IndyCar drivers and current Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon in a fiery crash at Las Vegas speedway in the final IndyCar Series race of the season.

Dan was a professional, a real character...fun, and always a pleasure to be around. But I really loved watching Dan race. He was sharp, aggressive and fearless, nerves of steel and a lead foot that never lifted, always determined, with a tremendous desire to win. Twice, his face will forever be engraved on the Borg Warner Trophy – as a two-time winner of the Indy 500.

Dan wore Kaenon when he won his first Indy 500 title in that magical year of 2005, where he also won the Series Championship. He did a lot for our brand and he was someone I really enjoyed, who always charmed when he came through our offices, just as he did at the track. Yes, he was a champion, but he brought something that unfortunately is all too void in the world of big time sports these days – he brought personality. He did what he wanted and he said what he felt, he spoke from the heart. In this world of the “scripted line,” Dan was a breath of fresh air.

Our hearts and deepest condolences go out to his wife Susie, their two sons and his family and friends who will all miss him greatly.”

I'm a sucker for iPhone apps in general. So when one of our very own brands at the Sunglass Garage launches a new app, you can bet I'll be checkn' it out.

The previous version of this app was a great start. But the best new feature of version 3.0 is the ability to "try on" sunglasses. You can snap a photo of yourself, or choose an existing one from your photo album. While its not perfect, it certainly does give you a great idea of what sunglass shapes and styles will look best on you. Afterward, you can share these photos with friends and family. Its easy to navigate and fun to use!

The new app also includes streaming news from Electric's website. You can read about new product releases, events, media coverage, watch videos and keep yourself up-to-date with all things Electric. They've provided a catalog of all of their current sunglasses and goggles for your shopping pleasure as well, along with other useful features.
